Homeowner Troubleshooting Checklist When My AC Trips the Breaker

Moses Lake summers push air conditioners hard. When the temperature sits in the 90s for weeks at a stretch across Grant County, from the neighborhoods around the lake itself out to Larson, Wheeler, and the Westshore area, an AC that keeps tripping the breaker isn’t bad luck. It’s your electrical system telling you something specific, and after years of service calls across this region during peak cooling season, we’ve found the cause almost always falls into one of five categories.

The Breaker Is Doing Its Job

A breaker trips because it’s protecting your home from an electrical fault or an overloaded circuit. It’s not the enemy. It’s the early warning system. Ignoring a repeat trip and just flipping it back on is how a simple repair turns into a major one, or worse, a house fire. Central Washington’s long, hot cooling season means HVAC units here run longer hours per day than almost anywhere else in the state, which means the electrical components tied to them see more wear, faster.

1. Dirty Air Filter or Blocked Airflow

This is the most common cause and the easiest fix. A clogged filter forces the blower motor and compressor to work harder than they’re designed to, which pulls more amperage than the circuit can safely carry. Moses Lake and the surrounding Columbia Basin generate a lot of fine dust and agricultural debris during summer, especially when wind kicks up across the scablands and farmland west of town, and that dust clogs filters faster than in most parts of the country. If you’re not changing a standard filter every 60 to 90 days during cooling season, start there before anything else.

2. A Failing Capacitor

Your AC’s compressor and fan motor rely on capacitors to start and run efficiently. When a capacitor weakens, the motor draws a hard starting current, sometimes called inrush current, that spikes high enough to trip the breaker. This is an aging-equipment problem. If your system is eight years or older and you’re getting repeat trips specifically on the hottest afternoons, when the compressor is working hardest to keep up with a 95 degree day, a failing capacitor is the first thing a technician should test.

3. A Dirty or Frozen Evaporator Coil

When the evaporator coil ices over, from low refrigerant, poor airflow, or a failing blower, the compressor has to work overtime once it can’t properly exchange heat. That extra strain shows up as electrical draw, and the breaker trips as a protective response. If you’ve noticed weak airflow or the system running constantly before the trip happens, this is likely the culprit, and it’s a repair that gets worse the longer it’s left unaddressed.

4. Compressor Nearing End of Life

The compressor is the heart of your outdoor unit. As it ages, internal wear increases the amps it draws to start and run. A compressor pulling excessive current will trip breakers with increasing frequency, often worse on the hottest days when it’s working its hardest. This is usually the most expensive of the five causes, and also the one homeowners are most tempted to ignore because replacement feels daunting. Given how many original units we still find running in homes throughout Ephrata, Quincy, and Moses Lake that are pushing fifteen or twenty years old, this is a real, common scenario in our area, not a rare one.

5. An Undersized or Aging Breaker and Panel

Here’s the one that’s easy to miss: sometimes the AC is fine, and the problem is the electrical panel itself. Many homes in Grant County, especially those built before the 1990s in older sections of Moses Lake, Ephrata, and Soap Lake, were wired for smaller HVAC loads than today’s systems draw, particularly after an AC upgrade or add-on down the road. A breaker rated too low for the unit, worn contacts inside an aging panel, or a panel that’s simply reached the end of its service life can all cause nuisance trips that have nothing to do with the AC unit itself.

This matters because it’s a safety issue, not just a comfort issue. Overheated breakers and worn panel components are a leading contributor to electrical fires. If your home is older, or if you’ve had electrical work done piecemeal over the years by different contractors, a full panel inspection should be part of the diagnosis, not an afterthought.

Why the Diagnosis Has to Cover Both Sides

We bring this up because we see it constantly on calls throughout Grant County: a homeowner replaces a capacitor, the trips stop for a month, and then it starts again because the real issue was a compressor drawing too much amperage the entire time, or a panel that couldn’t keep up regardless of what was fixed on the AC side. A proper diagnosis checks the electrical side and the mechanical side together in the same visit. HVAC-only companies test the unit. Electrical-only companies test the panel. Testing both together, in one visit, is how you actually get an answer instead of a guess.

When to Call Immediately

Stop resetting the breaker and call a professional if:

  • The breaker trips within minutes of the AC starting, every time
  • You smell anything burning near the panel or the outdoor unit
  • The breaker feels warm or hot to the touch
  • This is the second or third trip in one week

A repeat trip is your system asking for help. Answering that call with a proper diagnosis, rather than a reset, is the difference between a quick repair and a summer without air conditioning.
