Wildfire Smoke and Your HVAC System in Central Washington
Late summer in Central Washington means wildfire smoke is a near-certainty, not a rare event. Wenatchee, Moses Lake, and the surrounding Columbia Basin sit downwind of fire activity across the Cascades, the Okanogan, and into British Columbia most years, and smoke season now routinely stretches from July into October. When the Wenatchee Valley fills with haze off the Cascade foothills, or Moses Lake sits under a brown sky blown in from fires burning west of the Columbia, your HVAC system is the primary line of defense between that smoke and the air your family breathes indoors. Most systems aren’t set up to do that job well without some attention.
Why Standard Filters Aren’t Enough
The filter that came standard with your furnace or air handler, typically a MERV 8 fiberglass filter, is built to protect the equipment from dust, not to capture the fine particulate matter in wildfire smoke. Wildfire smoke is loaded with PM2.5, particles small enough to bypass a basic filter and settle deep in the lungs. To meaningfully reduce smoke particles indoors, you need a filter rated MERV 13 or higher.
Here’s the catch: not every system can handle a MERV 13 filter without modification. Higher-MERV filters are denser and restrict airflow more than your blower motor may be sized for. Forcing a MERV 13 into a system designed for MERV 8 can strain the blower, reduce efficiency, and in older systems, contribute to the exact kind of overheating that leads to premature failure. This is a case where more filtration isn’t automatically better unless your system is evaluated for it first, and it’s one of the most common mistakes we see homeowners make on their own heading into smoke season.
Sealing the Building, Not Just the Air
During heavy smoke events, the standard advice is to keep windows and doors closed and run your HVAC on recirculate rather than pulling in outside air. But older homes throughout Grant County, the Wenatchee Valley, and Chelan County often have enough uncontrolled air leakage, gaps around old duct boots, unsealed attic penetrations, leaky exterior doors, that smoke infiltrates regardless of what you do at the thermostat. A blower door test or basic infiltration assessment can identify where smoke is actually getting in, which is often a five-minute fix once it’s found. Homes in older parts of Wenatchee near the river, and older Moses Lake neighborhoods built before modern sealing standards, tend to show this problem more than newer construction.
Fresh Air Intake and ERV Systems
Homes with fresh air intake systems or energy recovery ventilators need a specific plan for smoke season. An ERV that’s set to continuously bring in outside air will happily pull smoke straight into your home unless it has its own filtration or a smoke-detection shutoff. If you have one of these systems, make sure it’s either fitted with adequate filtration or set up to pause fresh air intake automatically when outdoor air quality drops below a safe threshold. This is especially relevant for newer, tighter-built homes going up throughout East Wenatchee and the newer Moses Lake developments, since these systems are becoming standard in new construction across the region.
Portable Air Cleaners: Where They Help and Where They Don’t
A standalone HEPA air purifier is a reasonable supplement in a single bedroom or home office, but it’s not a substitute for whole-home filtration during a multi-day smoke event. The math doesn’t work: a portable unit rated for a 300 square foot room isn’t going to meaningfully clear the air in a 2,000 square foot house. If smoke season is a recurring issue for your household, and in Central Washington it is, whole-home filtration through your existing ductwork is the more effective long-term investment.
A Pre-Season Checklist Worth Doing Every Year
Before smoke season hits its peak, typically August through September across the Columbia Basin and Wenatchee Valley alike:
- Confirm your system can safely run a MERV 13 filter, or get it evaluated if you’re not sure
- Check that door and window weatherstripping is intact
- Have your ductwork inspected for leaks if it’s been more than five years
- Test any ERV or fresh air intake system’s shutoff function
- Replace filters immediately before smoke season starts, not partway through
When It’s Time to Bring in a Professional
A few situations mean it’s worth having your system evaluated rather than guessing:
- You’ve never confirmed whether your system can handle a higher-MERV filter
- Smoke smell is noticeable indoors even with windows and doors closed
- Your ductwork hasn’t been inspected in five years or more
- You have an ERV or fresh air system installed but aren’t sure how it behaves during a smoke event
A system that’s clean, properly filtered, and free of duct leaks does the job it’s supposed to do during a smoke event. A neglected system doesn’t, no matter how good the air purifier on the nightstand is. Getting your HVAC evaluated before smoke season, not during it, is the difference between a house that stays livable during a multi-day air quality alert and one that doesn’t.
